Santa Catalina

Reef breaks that built the country's surf reputation

Santa Catalina earned its status as Panama's surf capital on the strength of powerful, consistent reef breaks — La Punta's long, sometimes hollow rights alongside the more forgiving El Estero beach break for beginners. It remains a small-town setup: fantastic surf camps ranging from genuinely luxury to a rougher, classic Central American beach stay, depending on what you're there for.

Playa Venao

"Surfer's Paradise," and increasingly a wellness address too

In the Pedasí district of Los Santos, Playa Venao delivers soft-sand, 2–6 foot waves with 50–150 meter rides — approachable enough for novices, still rewarding for advanced surfers. The property mix has shifted upmarket in step with its reputation: Alaya offers private-pool suites with plunge pools and star-gazing nets, while Beach Break Surf Camp pairs surf coaching with jiu-jitsu and yoga on a beachfront where the rooms genuinely end where the sand begins.

Planning a Trip or a Move

Both coasts are a deliberate drive, not a weekend impulse

Neither Santa Catalina nor Playa Venao is a Panama City suburb — both require several hours by road, which is part of what's kept them from over-developing. For anyone weighing a second home near the surf rather than just a trip, that distance from the capital is the first number to plan around.
