Coffee.
The most expensive bean on Earth grows an hour away.

Boquete's Geisha variety broke a $30,000-per-kilogram auction record in 2025. Here's what a tour, a cup, and an actual working farm each cost.

Geisha, and Why It Broke the Auction Record

A floral, tea-like bean that redefined what coffee could sell for

Geisha is grown in the highlands above Boquete, and its reputation as the world's most coveted coffee variety isn't hype — the Peterson family's Hacienda La Esmeralda isolated Geisha cherry as a single-variety lot in 2004, won the Best of Panama auction at $20.10 a pound, and the category has climbed ever since. In 2025, La Esmeralda's Geisha Washed lot sold for $30,204 per kilogram — a figure that turned Boquete from a coffee town into a genuine pilgrimage site for the specialty-coffee world.

Touring the Farms

From a $20 tour to a $15 cup

Boquete is the natural starting point, with the highest concentration of plantations offering tours: Café Ruiz runs about $20 per person, Finca Dos Jefes around $30, and Finca Casanga $35. At Finca Lerida, a cup of Geisha itself runs roughly $15 — a way to taste the record-breaking variety without bidding at auction.

For the Entrepreneur, Not Just the Tourist

A working farm is a real acquisition category, not a lifestyle prop

Small-scale coffee properties in the 5–10 hectare range typically run $200,000–500,000 for established farms suited to boutique production — genuine Geisha-cultivation potential, tourism integration through tastings and farm tours, and a residential component that lets an owner-operator actually live on the land. It's a category we track for clients thinking beyond city real estate toward a working asset with its own income and story.
