Inside Soberanía National Park, Pipeline Road has held its reputation since a 1977 Audubon Christmas Bird Count logged 314 species in the surrounding Central Canal Area in a single day. Eight species of wren, five trogons, four puffbirds, three motmots and the elusive Harpy Eagle have all been recorded along the route — this is also where biologists ran the Harpy Eagle reintroduction program, which tells you something about the quality of the forest itself.
The Canopy Tower sits atop Semaphore Hill, ten minutes from Pipeline Road, converted from a Cold War-era radar installation into a purpose-built birding facility. The Panama Rainforest Discovery Center, also off Pipeline Road, adds an observation tower with four rest platforms, each opening onto a different layer of the canopy.
Metropolitan Park covers the city's own lowland forest option, while Cerro Azul and Cerro Jefe add foothill habitat, and the cloud forests of El Valle de Antón and Altos del María — including Cerro Gaital Natural Monument — round out Central Panama's best sites for anyone building a serious life list.
